Fishing spots in the Hudson Valley NY

If you are looking for some great fishing spots in the Hudson Valley NY area, you are in luck. There are plenty of places to cast your line and enjoy the scenic views, whether you prefer freshwater or saltwater fishing, fly fishing or spinning, or fishing from a boat or the shore. Here are some of the best places to go fishing in the Hudson Valley NY, according to the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation and other sources.

Hudson River: The Hudson River is the premier fishing spot in the Hudson Valley. This majestic river runs from New York City to Albany, and offers a variety of fish species, including striped bass, bluefish, shad, herring, catfish, carp, perch, sunfish, and more. You can fish from many public access points along the river, such as boat launches, parks, and bridges. You can also fish from a boat, but make sure you have a valid registration and follow the boating regulations. The best time to fish for striped bass is in the spring and fall, when they migrate up and down the river.

Winding Hills Park: Winding Hills Park is a county park in Montgomery that features a 40-acre lake and a four-acre pond for fishing. You can fish for large mouth bass, crappie, bluegill, pumpkin seed, and trout (stocked in the spring) from the shoreline or from a boat (only electric powered boats are allowed). The park also has picnic areas, hiking trails, camping sites, and a nature center.

Orvis Sandanona Fly Fishing School: If you want to learn or improve your fly fishing skills, you can enroll in one of the famous Orvis Fly Fishing Schools in Millbrook. The school offers one-day or two-day courses that cover all aspects of fly fishing, such as casting, knot tying, fly selection, reading water, and landing fish. You will also get to practice on a private trout pond and stream on the property. The school provides all the equipment and instruction you need, as well as lunch and snacks.

Ferncliff Forest: Ferncliff Forest is a nature preserve in Rhinebeck that has a 40-acre lake stocked with rainbow trout. You can fish from the shore or from a rowboat (available for rent). The lake also has large mouth bass, bluegill, perch, and pickerel. The preserve has hiking trails, a fire tower, and camping sites.

These are just some of the many places to go fishing in the Hudson Valley NY area. You can find more information on fishing locations, regulations, licenses, and tips on the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation website https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/fishing.html or other online resources.
